Guide to visiting Flam, Norway as well as the Flamsabana Railway and the Fjord Cruise

MrWildy's personal introduction to Flam, Norway 
Flam is located at the head of Aurlandsfjorden, Norway in a truly spectular setting. Honestly, Flam is not that exciting, but what's exciting was the railway leading into Flam, and the Fjord cruise departing from Flam. 

As it was summer, and summer was supposed to be packed in Flam, the small village was surrounded by hordes of visitors, who were stuck in the village not knowing where else to go and what else to do. 

MrWildy's Tips on visiting Flam, Norway

• Do arrive into Flam via the Flamsabana Railway (which I would covered later). You will need to change trains at Myrdal station. 
• Try to stay in Flam for a day even though there are limited options. You can book a trip to the Stegastein lookout, and wake up early to enjoy the village in the misty morning.
• If you are looking for a good restaurant and don't mind paying for it, you can consider Bakkastova, a cafe near the main centre. Try their goat sausages!
• If you are looking for a simpler meal, consider the Flam Bakery. Get a sandwich for 60 NOK.
• But if you are really really trying to save, there's actually a COOP near the bridge area, near the city centre. You can buy a potato salad and some bread for 40 NOK.

Stegastein Viewpoint
​The Stegastein Viewpoint is easily accessible from Flam via a car or bus ride. With a panoramic view 650 metres above Aurlandsfjord, Stegastein gives an incredible detour from Flam, especially if you are already planning to stay a night at Flam. Stegastein Lookout was specially designed and is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the region, not only for the structure itself but also the fantastic views that it gives. 

It is free to get into the lookout but you might need to pay for transportation up onto the viewpoint. You can book a trip from 335 NOK from the tourist office at the city centre.

Guide to Flam Railway or Flamsabana Railway, Norway
​The Flam Railway is not going to be expensive, but it's listed as a "to do" in Norway in a Nutshell. And if you are planning to get into Flam and do the Fjord cruise then you should certainly take the Flam Railway into Flam! 

Tips to Making the Best of Flam Railway

• Booking your tickets in advance because they are always sold out during the hot summer season. Book via this link. 
• There are no assigned seats, so once you arrive at Myrdal station quickly drag your luggage and then wait at carriage no. 2. That's the start of the train. 
• The first and last seats of each carriage have windows that open slightly. This would be useful for you to take photos. 
• From Mrydal to Flam, choose the left side of the carriage for the best photo opportunities. 
• There will be a stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall. Remember to get out and enjoy the music and performance. More importantly, look out for the red lady dancing around the ruins!!

Fjord Cruise along the Naeroyfjord via Vison of the Fjords
