Instead of testing and trying new methods, you can rely on research that has been done by medical pratitioners and the world's best athletes.

Start with the Minimum Effective Dose (MED)

The first thing to learn is the importance of the Minimum Effective Dose. Created by Arthur Jones, a leading specialist in exercise science. Based on his research, he identified the minimum amount of effort required to produce the desired outcome. Interestingly, anything more than the MED would be affect the end result in a negative way.

Based on this, Brian MacKenzie, a triathlete and Ironman competitor, changed his training schedule. Using the MED method, he switched from his usual 30 hours-per-week routine to a 6.5 hours-per week routine. Result? He was placed fourth in the most intense race in the world.

Losing Weight the Harajuku Moment

One of the proven methods to lose weight is the slow-carb diet. Within 30 days of using it, the author was able to drop 9kg without any exercise. There are a few rules to abide by:

1. Stop eating white carbohydrates. This includes all kinds of rice, bread, noodles, potatoes, pasta, cereal, etc.

2. Keep eating the same meals. There is a small selection including main proteins (eggs, beef, pork, chicken breast or thigh), legumes (beans and lentils). Included too are vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, peas, green beans, etc.)

3. Avoid drinking calories. Avoid milk, soy milk, fruit juices and soft drinks. Instead, drink water, including unsweetened tea or coffee. Red wine is okay in moderation, but always keep away from beer.

4. No fruits. This is because fruits contain fructose, which is a type of sugar.

5. Give yourself a cheat day. This is because binge-eating once a week increases your metabolism and stimulates fat loss. (!!)

Harajuku Moment?

To recall the Harajuku Moment, read this excerpt. Here’s how Chad recounts the psychological shift that empowered his impressive physical transformation :
“I was in Tokyo with a group of friends. We all went down to Harajuku to see if we could see some artistically dressed youngsters and also to shop for fabulous clothing, which the area is famous for. A couple of the people with us were pretty fashionable dressers and had some specific things in mind they wanted to buy.

After walking into shops several times and leaving without seriously considering buying anything, one of my friends and I gave up and just waited outside while the others continued shopping. We both lamented how unfashionable we were. I then found myself saying the following to him: ‘For me, it doesn’t even matter what I wear; I’m not going to look good anyway.’ I think he agreed with me. I can’t remember, but that’s not the point.

The point was that, as I said those words, they hung in the air like when you say something super-embarrassing in a loud room but happen to catch the one randomly occurring slice of silence that happens all night long. Everyone looks at you like you’re an idiot. But this time, it was me looking at myself critically. I heard myself say those words and I recognized them not for their content, but for their tone of helplessness. I am, in most of my endeavors, a solidly successful person.

I decide I want things to be a certain way, and I make it happen. I’ve done it with my career, my learning of music, understanding of foreign languages, and basically everything I’ve tried to do. For a long time, I’ve known that the key to getting started down the path of being remarkable in anything is to simply act with the intention of being remarkable. If I want a better-than-average career, I can’t simply ‘go with the flow’ and get it.

Most people do just that: they wish for an outcome but make no intention-driven actions toward that outcome. If they would just do something most people would find that they get some version of the outcome they’re looking for. That’s been my secret.

Stop wishing and start doing. Yet here I was, talking about arguably the most important part of my life— my health— as if it was something I had no control over. I had been going with the flow for years. Wishing for an outcome and waiting to see if it would come. I was the limp, powerless ego I detest in other people. But somehow, as the school nerd who always got picked last for everything, I had allowed ‘not being good at sports’ or ‘not being fit’ to enter what I considered to be inherent attributes of myself.

The net result is that I was left with an understanding of myself as an incomplete person. And though I had (perhaps) overcompensated for that incompleteness by kicking ass in every other way I could, I was still carrying this powerlessness around with me and it was very slowly and subtly gnawing away at me from the inside.

Advanced Occam's Protocol Method

An advanced form involves weightlifting exercises. This includes the overhead squat, where you perform ten squats and lift a barbell at the same time. To do so, you need to position both of your feet further apart than shoulder width. Make sure your knees are bent about 45 degrees and your thighs are parallel to the floor.

You can refer to this guide by the "fourhourbodycouple".

The secret to the workout is in the 5/5 cadence.

This means in every workout you do, you move in a 5 seconds up, 5 seconds down motion. This ensure constant maximum load on your muscles at all times. This will eliminate momentum that most weight lifters use to help them finish their sets. The reward of doing 5/5 cadence? You only do ONE set. That's right. One set. In that one set, you must hit 7 repititions, but if you can do more, do more. It's one set to failure. 10 minutes after each workout, you'll want to do more. Don't do more. Just stick to the same two exercises in each workout.

WORKOUT A: (Machine Option)
Workout (A) consists of two primary lifts + (optional) abdominal exercises from “six minute Abs”

I. Close-Grip Supinated (palms facing you) Pull Down x 7 reps (5/5 count)
II. Machine Shoulder Press x 7 reps (5/5 count)

(Optional)
III. Two Abdominal Exercises from “Six-Minute Abs”Movement #1: Thy Myotatic Crunch

1.Start with your arms stretched overhead as high as you can. Keep your arms next to your ears for the entirety of the exercise.

2. Lower your arms under control 4 seconds until your fingers touch the floor.

3. Pause at the bottom for 2 seconds.

4. Rise under control and pause in the upper fully contracted position for 2 seconds.

5. Repeat for a total of 10 repetitions.
Movement # 2: The Cat Vomit Exercise (Optional)
1. Get on all fours (arms and legs) and focus your gaze either directly under your head or slightly in front of you. Do not arch your back or strain your neck, as this will cause undue stress.

2. Forcefully exhale from your mouth until air is fully expelled.

3. Hold your breath and pull your belly button upward toward your spine as hard as you can, for a target of 8-12 seconds.

4. Inhale fully through the nose after the 8-12 second hold.

We have reached the end of Part I. We will cover Part II and Part III next.

Five Principles for Changing the World

Key Ideas from "Be Fearless", book by Jean Case

Big Bet

  • The first principle is to make a "Big Bet". It is a kind of audacious plan that defies common assumptions. It grabs people's attention.
  • In the 1960s, John F. Kennedy made a bold promise on TV that the feat of humans setting foot on the moon would be completed within the decade.
  • Elon Musk was another example, and in 2018 his SpaceX program silenced some of his critics when it successfully launched its own rocket.
  • A lot of people assume that things are the way they are, and that there is no use to try to cyhange anything. Yet there is a small minority of fearless people that defy these common assumptions.
  • By questioning assumptions, a Big Bet can help you see what the future holds.

Take Chances

Photo by dylan nolte on Unsplash
  • To change the world, you need to get uncomfortable. You will need to be bold and take chances.
  • While changing the world is never going to be a walk in the park, it doesn't mean that you have to start from scratch and reinvent the wheel every time.
  • Changing the way you do things can be risky, but in order to avoid regrets you will likely want to start taking those bold chances.
  • The most common regret people have in their later years is not that they have chosen to do something risky, but rather that they chose to play it safe.

Make Your Failures Matter By Learning From Them and Keeping the Bigger Picture in View

Photo by Estée Janssens on Unsplash
  • You might be surprised that many of the big game-changers see failures as a good thing.
  • They know that behind every success story you will find failures.
  • This is because failures are often an integral part of the learning process.
  • Quote from IBM founder Thomas J. Watson: "if you really want to succeed, you should double your rate of failure."
  • Astro Teller, a X lab scientist, doesn't tolerate failure but expects failure. If they can't bring a project down, then they know that there's a good chance that it's a brilliant project and idea.

Make Sure Not to Get Inside Your Bubble, and Try To Eliminate Blind Spots

Picture
  • Go on road trips, and explore beyond your comfort zone or boundary.
  • This ensures that you get outside your bubble.
  • Looking beyond your bubble is critical to understanding what's truly going on in the world and getting rid of any blind spots or biases that you might have.

Have a Sense of Urgency - Seize the Moment and Respond to Crises

  • Let urgency overpower your fear.
  • Everyone is built to experience fear as a way to protect ourselves from danger, but fear can also get in the way of taking chances.
  • By being bold, you can do what it takes to make things amazing.
  • When someone's back in against the wall, this is when adrenaline kicks in - you might find yourself doing amazing things that wouldn't happen in normal circumstances.
  • Use this passion to your advantage!
  • Don't overthink things. The more time you spend thinking things through, the more likely you will end up paralyzed by uncertainty and confusion.
  • This is why it is useful; to let urgency propel you into action. Just do it.

Never Get a "Real" Job: How to Dump Your Boss, Build a Business and Not Go Broke

Picture
Read the book "Never Get a "Real" Job: How to Dump Your Boss, Build a Business and Not Go Broke" by Scott Gerber
Summarising it in the following bite-size notes:
  • A third of small businesses fail by their second year, and less than half of the businesses last four years.
  • Analysing failures teaches us valuable lessons that will help us to avoid failure in the future.
  • Next, take some time to figure out what the consequences would be if things do not work out.
  • The third thing is to figure out whether your business idea would continue to be a good idea at any point in time.
  • Finally, consider all alternatives - if the business plan does not work out, what is next?

Running a Start-up

  • When we start a business from scratch, there is bound to be lots of uncertainty.
  • By being authentic in our interactions with our customers, we become more relatable.
  • Do not assume that others will share your passion.
  • Make sure it is realistic that you can make it happen on your own.
  • The crucial first step is a painstakingly detailed business plan. This wil take time to draft, but yet it is so so very important.

A One-Paragraph Start-Up Plan

  • This plan lets you test your ideas by doing, and it creates an action strategy that you can use as your business grows and evolves.
  • The fundamental question you will need to ask yourself
    • What is your product or service that you would like to offer?
    • Who would be your primary clients?
    • How do you plan to generate immediate revenue?
  • Try to answer with a few short sentences.
  • Next, turn your plan into lists filled with action steps, called Guess and Checklists.
  • From each sentence, generate five points you can put into action right now.
  • Create a chronological checklist, complete with expenses and to-dos.
  • Each time you complete a to-do, do a self-evaluation. What went well and what can be improved?
  • Evolve your plan by removing the hypotheses that did not work, and then improve on those that did.

How do you Partner?

  • First question to ask - are you sure you will need a partner?
  • Second question to ask - would a standard partnership be the best model?
  • Third question - what does your partner bring to the table? Are your goals aligned?
  • Fourth question - will the partnership work both in theory and in practice?
  • Fifth question - make sure you draft a partnership agreement and put everything down in writing. Remember to define all equity ownership, corporate responsibilities, etc.

Design Your Entrepreneurial Lifestyle

  • An entrepreneur has freedom that an employee does not have. Yet it is not a "normal' lifestyle as he or she will need to put in a lot of time into the business to make it work.
  • Sometimes, you will need to wear different hats, from accounts, to sales, to marketing and operations.
  • You will need to design a power routine, which allow you to adjust your life around your business strategy.
  • In the beginning, you will need to work every day for an entire month. It will not be easy, but it will help you gather all the information that you need.
  • You will then need to categorise and determine the success for three areas: Strategic Planning, Internal Operations and Revenue Generation.
  • Keep adjusting your power routine until you are confident that its perfect.
Picture

Start With Your Website and Lunch!

The first impression starts with your website - which is the most important component of your brand.
  • Try one of the inexpensive, subscription-based service providers, such as Weebly (which I am using!)
  • Figure out what kind of information and connections that you will need. Then brainstorm the list of people who might be able to help.
  • Pick about 10 people from your long list and reach out to invite them for lunch. Make this a personal invitation and listen to your lunchtime consultants to gather as much advice and connections as  possible.

Effective Marketing

  • You will need to start by getting a well-crafted message out there in a targeted way.
  • The first step is to create a brand language, which in essence is a bunch of key phrases that describe what you do.
  • The next step is an active brand message, which is a single sentence of about seven to eight words.
  • You have to make sure that the distribution channels for your marketing fit the goals in your active brand message.

Last Point - Prioritise Your Health!

  • Initiating a start-up will take a lot of time and effort, but that doesn't mean working 24/7.
  • To persist in the long term, you will need to take good care of yourself.
  • Make it a habit to exercise and give yourself some down time.
